Strong Ground
This is a space for the adults caring for children after an earthquake. It was created by educators and collaborators with lessons learned from living through a natural disaster in our community in Los Angeles with the 2025 wildfires.
The Book – Azul
A story to empower children through the process of change after an earthquake.
Why was this book written?
- So children who have lived through something similar don’t feel alone. This is the central principle of bibliotherapy: when a child sees their own experience reflected in a character, three processes occur — identification, catharsis, and the discovery that they are not alone — which reduce emotional isolation.
- To invite play and connection as part of healing. Play helps children understand their world, express difficult emotions, rebuild social bonds, and feel safe again; that’s why organizations like Save the Children build it into their post-disaster recovery programs. Connection with adults, other children, or even small objects — through play, reading together, and drawing together — is part of the healing process, not just an extra.
- To give them a sense of what’s coming next, and ease their anxiety. Reassuring children about the future and keeping routine and familiarity helps them see that life is safe and predictable. Speaking in “hopeful” terms about future events helps a child rebuild trust in their own future and in the world.
- To give them the chance to draw their own story. Children often don’t have the language or emotional capacity to put what they felt into words; drawing lets them communicate what they can’t verbalize. Programs like Save the Children’s HEART use drawing and other arts after disasters to help children process their experiences and reduce stress.
